Important Trip Details:
You can expect 1 or 2 half-day excursions for each day in Antarctica depending on weather conditions. During guided shore excursions, guests break up into smaller special interest groups with several options ranging from an easy shoreline walk to a strenuous hike (1-3 hours.) About Ocean Nova
Ocean Nova is a great ship for Antarctica expeditions. It is a sturdy and nimble expedition vessel that was built in Denmark in 1992 to sail the ice-choked waters of Greenland. It has a strengthened hull that is ideally suited for expedition travel in Antarctica. The ship was fully refurbished in 2006 and since then has benefitted from annual upgrades and improvements.
For our air-cruises, Ocean Nova has a capacity for 67 passengers accommodated in comfortable outside cabins. The ship offers three categories of accommodation: dedicated Single Cabins, Twin Cabins, and Triple Cabins. All cabins feature a picture window, a writing desk with a chair, a wardrobe, an individually controlled heating system, and a private bathroom with a shower.
In addition to a glass-enclosed observation lounge and presentation room, Ocean Nova also has a spacious dining room, a bar, a library, a small gym, and an infirmary. The ship has a fleet of Seven Zodiac boats that are well suited for disembarking and wildlife watching.

ClimateThere may be days of warm sunshine, but be prepared for wind, rain, and possible snow. Daytime temperatures are usually 20°- 32°F.
Who will meet me on arrival?Arrive no later than 2pm on Day 1 and you will be met by a ship representative who will assist with your transfer to the hotel.
Will I get sea-sick?By flying to King George Island, you will skip the open water crossing of the Drake Passage. There are a few hours of open water crossing, but you'll mostly be in protected waters along the Antarctic Peninsula.
What kind of plane will we fly on?A BAE-146 jet aircraft with the capacity of 71 passengers. It is a high-wing aircraft with very short runway requirements, which make it particularly suited for this kind of destination.
What happens if weather delays the plane?There is a thorough contingency plan which is outlined in your pre-trip documentation. It includes any necessary hotel nights, meals, and activities in Punta Arenas due to weather delays.
Do you provide waterproof jackets?No. On this trip, you need to bring your own waterproof outwear - pants and jacket. We have recommendations in the pre-trip documentation.
Do you provide boots?Yes. On this trip, the ship will provide high-quality insulated polar boots for all travelers.

Andre Belem
Andre earned a degree in Oceanography and spent his first Antarctic winter on board the R/V Nathaniel Palmer cruising the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas. This expedition reached the furthest south position for a ship in these waters! Andre then went on to earn a PhD in Polar Oceanography at the Alfred-Wegener Institute. For the last 20 years he has studied Antarctica’s role in global climate change, working with other scientists focusing on physical and biological processes in sea ice. When he isn’t leading trips, André is Professor of Earth Sciences at Federal University in Rio de Janeiro, leading his research as part of the international team of Past Climate Change Group.
Nigel Millus
Nigel has always had an interest in the outdoors and wildlife, initially visiting Antarctica as a chef where he spent six summers and three winters at British research stations. He eventually learned to scuba dive and bird-watch, and proceeded to work as an ornithologist and naturalist on expedition cruise ships in the Polar regions. He has completed over 140 voyages in the past 18 years all over Antarctica! Nigel is passionate about all things Antarctic and is looking forward to sharing his enthusiasm and knowledge with MT Sobek travelers.
Allison Cusick
Originally from Seattle, Allison holds an MSc in Marine Biodiversity & Conservation and BSc in Biology with a minor in Earth & Space Sciences. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography and her research focuses on understanding phytoplankton within polar fjords and how melting glaciers influence the ecosystem. As lead scientist to the citizen science project FjordPhyto, she hopes to engage travelers in her research. She first travelled to Antarctica in 2013 on a research ice-breaker in the Ross Sea and has spent her Austral summers on the Antarctic Peninsula. When not doing science, you can find Allison scuba diving or ultra-running, she even ran a marathon in Antarctica, dressed as a banana!

Level 1 trips are the easiest, Level 3 trips are moderate, and Level 5 trips are our most strenuous—perfect for those seeking the ultimate challenge. Easygoing – Level 1
Our most relaxed style of travel. Come prepared with flexibility and a spirit of adventure. Activities may include game drives along dusty or bumpy roads, canoe rides or river floats, sailing, or walks of up to 30 minutes on flat terrain. Trail conditions may include cobblestones, pavement, gravel, or dirt paths. On some days you may be on your feet for much of the time.
Easy-to-Moderate – Level 2
Active trips are appropriate for most travelers. You don’t need any previous kayaking, hiking, or other experience, but should be in generally fit condition. Trips may include short hikes or walking of up to 3 hours at elevations below 6,000 feet, sea kayaking in protected waters, or river rafting on Class I-II rapids.
Multi-Level – Level 2 & 3
These flexible trips are perfect for travelers seeking a range of activity levels, from easy to moderate, with two options to suit your preference and energy on the day. This type of trip also enables you to travel with friends who are more, or less, active than you, and either start or end the activity together. For example, Level 2 guests may choose a 3-hour hike while Level 3 guests may choose a 6-hour hike. This variety ensures that there’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a leisurely experience or a bit more of a challenge. No matter your choice, you’ll enjoy breathtaking scenery, unforgettable adventures, and plenty of time together as a group.
Moderate – Level 3
The majority of MT Sobek trips. These typically include 3 to 6 hours of physical activity per day, such as rafting or wilderness camping. Ocean Nova is a great ship for Antarctica expeditions. It is a sturdy and nimble expedition vessel that was built in Denmark in 1992 to sail the ice-choked waters of Greenland. It has a strengthened hull that is ideally suited for expedition travel in Antarctica. The ship was fully refurbished in 2006 and since then has benefitted from annual upgrades and improvements.
For our air-cruises, Ocean Nova has a capacity for 67 passengers accommodated in comfortable outside cabins. The ship offers three categories of accommodation: dedicated Single Cabins, Twin Cabins, and Triple Cabins. All cabins feature a picture window, a writing desk with a chair, a wardrobe, an individually controlled heating system, and a private bathroom with a shower.
In addition to a glass-enclosed observation lounge and presentation room, Ocean Nova also has a spacious dining room, a bar, a library, a small gym, and an infirmary. The ship has a fleet of Seven Zodiac boats that are well suited for disembarking and wildlife watching.

Who will meet me on arrival?Arrive no later than 2pm on Day 1 and you will be met by a ship representative who will assist with your transfer to the hotel.
Will I get sea-sick?By flying to King George Island, you will skip the open water crossing of the Drake Passage. There are a few hours of open water crossing, but you'll mostly be in protected waters along the Antarctic Peninsula.
What kind of plane will we fly on?A BAE-146 jet aircraft with the capacity of 71 passengers. It is a high-wing aircraft with very short runway requirements, which make it particularly suited for this kind of destination.
What happens if weather delays the plane?There is a thorough contingency plan which is outlined in your pre-trip documentation. It includes any necessary hotel nights, meals, and activities in Punta Arenas due to weather delays.
Do you provide waterproof jackets?No. On this trip, you need to bring your own waterproof outwear - pants and jacket. We have recommendations in the pre-trip documentation.

Andre Belem
Andre earned a degree in Oceanography and spent his first Antarctic winter on board the R/V Nathaniel Palmer cruising the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas. This expedition reached the furthest south position for a ship in these waters! Andre then went on to earn a PhD in Polar Oceanography at the Alfred-Wegener Institute. For the last 20 years he has studied Antarctica’s role in global climate change, working with other scientists focusing on physical and biological processes in sea ice. When he isn’t leading trips, André is Professor of Earth Sciences at Federal University in Rio de Janeiro, leading his research as part of the international team of Past Climate Change Group.
Nigel Millus
Nigel has always had an interest in the outdoors and wildlife, initially visiting Antarctica as a chef where he spent six summers and three winters at British research stations. He eventually learned to scuba dive and bird-watch, and proceeded to work as an ornithologist and naturalist on expedition cruise ships in the Polar regions. He has completed over 140 voyages in the past 18 years all over Antarctica! Nigel is passionate about all things Antarctic and is looking forward to sharing his enthusiasm and knowledge with MT Sobek travelers.
Allison Cusick
Originally from Seattle, Allison holds an MSc in Marine Biodiversity & Conservation and BSc in Biology with a minor in Earth & Space Sciences. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography and her research focuses on understanding phytoplankton within polar fjords and how melting glaciers influence the ecosystem. As lead scientist to the citizen science project FjordPhyto, she hopes to engage travelers in her research. She first travelled to Antarctica in 2013 on a research ice-breaker in the Ross Sea and has spent her Austral summers on the Antarctic Peninsula. When not doing science, you can find Allison scuba diving or ultra-running, she even ran a marathon in Antarctica, dressed as a banana!

Ride 4 a Woman
We are proud to support Ride 4 a Woman, a charitable organization that empowers the women of Bwindi, Uganda More than 300 women from 11 villages now use or work at the Ride 4 a Woman community center, where they can learn to pedal sew, weave baskets, dance, sing and drum; learning new skills, making a living and making it possible for their children to gain an education.
Community Rhino Conservation Initiative
We are proud to support the Community Rhino Conservation Initiative to help benefit the communities and wildlife of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. The CRCI has re-introduced rhino to this part of Zimbabwe in a highly secure and sustainable way to eventually accommodate a viable population of free roaming black and white rhino.
